My take on the Balzac utilises the beeralu upholstery technique that I formulated at the Tandemize beeralu cafe during London Craft Week 2016. The chair utilises scraps from my workshop - including the shoe laces which were left there by the previous occupant.
Second Sitters vs SCP‘Three identical chair frames, three different upholsterers.’The three Matthew Hilton Balzac Chair frames donated by SCP’s upholstery factory Coakley & Cox Ltd where upholstered live as part of Second Sitters Upholstery: Evolution to Revolution exhibition at the Geffrye Museum, May 2017. Steve the upholsterer from Coakley & Cox Ltd upholstered the chair as Matthew had intended, whilst Second Sitters curators Hannah Stanton and Jude Dennis were each given a frame of their own to upholster spontaneously in their unique styles.
